Study: Cell phone towers safe for kids
Fri, Jun 06 2010
Scientists report cell phone towers have no medical effect, including cancer, on children living near them, following a major study in Britain.

The study, deemed most comprehensive of its kind, was conducted on some 7,000 children to address 'the patterns of early childhood cancers across Britain.' It found no difference between children under the age of five who lived near or away from a cell phone tower.

Paul Elliot, Director of the Center for Environment and Health at London's Imperial College, who published the study in the British Medical Journal on Wednesday, describes the findings as "reassuring."

He said, "We found no pattern to suggest that the children of moms living near a base station during pregnancy had a greater risk of developing cancer than those who lived elsewhere."

Considering the widespread utilization of cell phones in recent years, questions have been raised on the possible health effects such as brain tumors or other types of cancer due t use of cell phones and cell phone towers near residential areas, Reuters reports.

Elliot believes that his research will further reinforce other studies that have not found any relevance between the use of cell phones and cancers.

Thirteen thousand cell phones were used over a 10-year period. It found no clear connection between cancer and cell phones.

"This is a carefully done study by a highly reputable group of environmental scientists," said Eileen Rubery, former Head of British Government's Public Health Prevention Department. "It is reassuring that no adverse affects have been found and this fits with the anticipated and known biological effects from such sites."
